Six of My Favorite Hymns

I would like to share with you some hymns that have really meant a lot to me over the years. Maybe they have had an impact on your life as well. Or maybe you don’t sing hymns, but have been blessed by other songs and know what it’s like when one song brings back many memories.

So here are just a few of my favorites, though I could really list dozens!

#1: Battle hymn of the Republic

(Verse 1)

Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord,

He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored;

He hath loosed the fateful lightning of his terrible swift sword-

His truth is marching on.

Glory! glory, Hallelujah!

Glory! glory, Hallelujah!

Glory! glory, Hallelujah!

His truth is marching on.

~Julia Ward Howe

#2: O for a Thousand Tongues

(Verse 1)

O for a thousand tongues to sing

My great redeemer’s praise,

The glories of my God and King,

The triumphs of His grace.

(Verse 5)

Hear Him, ye deaf; His praise, ye  dumb,

Your loosened tongues employ;

Ye blind, behold your Savior come;

And leap, ye lame, for joy.

~Charles Wesley

#3: He could have called ten thousand angels

(Verse 1)

They bound the hands of Jesus

in the garden where He prayed;

They led Him thro’ the streets in shame.

They spat upon the Savior so pure and free from sin;

They said, “Crucify Him; He’s to blame.”

He could have called ten thousand angels

To destroy the world and set Him free.

He could have called ten thousand angels

But He died alone for you and me.

~Ray Overholt

#4: Fairest Lord Jesus

(Verse 3)

Fair is the sunshine,

Fairer still the moonlight,

And all the twinkling, starry host:

Jesus shines brighter,

Jesus shines purer

Than all the angels heaven can boast.

#5: Face to Face

(Verse 4)

Face to face – O blissful moment!

Face to face – to see and know;

Face to face with my redeemer,

Jesus Christ who loves me so!

Face to face I shall behold Him,

Far beyond the starry sky;

Face to Face, In all His glory,

I shall see Him by and by!

~Carrie E. Breck

#6: Complete in Thee

(Verse 1)

Complete in Thee! no work of mine

May take, dear Lord, the place of Thine;

Thy blood hath pardon bought for me,

And I am now complete in Thee.

Yea, justified! O blessed thought!

And sanctified! Salvation wrought!

Thy blood hath pardon bought for me,

And glorified, I too, shall be!

(Verse 4)

Dear Saviour! when before Thy bar

All tribes and tongues assembled are,

Among Thy chosen will I be,

At Thy right hand, complete in Thee.

Aaron R. Wolfe

Were any of these hymns favorites of yours? Do you have another special hymn? What is a song that has helped or influenced you in the past?

  1. Hi Leah, I read this a couple of weeks ago and am just now stopping long enough to reply. I enjoyed reading the verses to some of your favorite songs. We tend to find new favorites through the years, but I always remember the hymn I especially liked in my childhood, What a Friend we Have in Jesus. I still love the thought that He is my very best Friend. Love you! Keep up the fun blog. Gramma
