Every day he lurks in the shadows.
He crouches, ready to pounce.
He is sly, he is sneaky. He plots and schemes. He transforms himself into a hundred figures.
Looking for the moment you are not ready. The moment when you are most vulnerable. And at the exact second you least expect him, he springs upon you.
Or, more often, he sneaks up to you and you don’t even realize you have given in.
1 Peter 5:8
“Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:”
The “he” I speak of is Satan, the deceiver, the father of lies. He seeks every day to rob us of treasure. Heavenly treasure.
He is ruthless and relentless. He rests not unless he has caused someone to fall. He laughs to see you fail. He accuses you before God.
But just like we can learn self defense in case we are attacked physically, we can learn the self defense skills we need to protect ourselves spiritually. To keep ourselves safe from this terrible predator.
“Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”
Jesus set the example. When He was tempted of the devil, He fought the temptation with the sword of the word of God.
We have a very real adversary who sits at the doors of our hearts and the doors of our minds, who will slip in at any and every occasion. He is cunning and cruel.
“Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves.”
Be smarter than Satan. Outwit him.
“21. If so be that ye have heard him, and have been taught by him, as the truth is in Jesus:
22. That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts;
23. And be renewed in the spirit of your mind;
24. And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.
25. Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour: for we are members one of another.
26. Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath:
27. Neither give place to the devil.”
Don’t give the devil any room. Be ready for him, be faster than him, judo-throw him to the ground when he attacks. Defend yourself. God will help you if you call upon His name. And turn the tides on the devil! Instead of letting him threaten you, be a threat to him and destroy the evil he tries to accomplish in your life and the lives of others.
We must not let him triumph. We must learn to use the sword God gave us,
“Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.”
2 Corinthians 2:11
So, friends, be a threat.
Be a threat to Satan.
