Broken chains

Broken chains.

I left them behind

On that day

When the truth freed my mind.

Broken chains

Lay there in the dust

I turned away and ran

Leaving them there to rust.

Without my consent,

I had been hostage to deceit;

Before I could even fight

I knew defeat.

For years and years

They had kept me bound;

I was captive, but now

Those chains lay broken on the ground.

Broken chains! Broken chains!

You’ll never hold me back again.

You have no power,

You have no strength,

I’ve thrown you off,

Stamped out your stain.

I’ve trampled you

Under my feet

I know the truth

And I stand free.

Broken chains,

I smiled as you snapped.

You’ll contain me no more,

You cannot hold me back.

Broken chains,

I watched your power die.

I fled your grasp

I felt as if I’d fly.

You put over my eyes

A vail colored, not black

But when I saw it was fake

I threw it behind my back.

And once cords held

My mind a slave

But truth broke me loose –

I have been saved!

Broken chains! Broken chains!

You’ll never hold me back again.

You have no power,

You have no strength,

I’ve thrown you off,

Stamped out your stain.

I’ve trampled you

Under my feet

I know the truth

And I stand free.

Broken chains –

You rattled as you fell –

The noise seemed to protest

As I fled your dirty cell.

Broken chains –

Compassion I have none

You oppressed me for a time

But the truth has won.

Broken chains –

Forever I am free

There is nothing now

That you can do to me.

Broken chains –

Your world has been destroyed.

It’s left you as you are –

Completely void.

Broken chains,

I’ll build a giant fire

Throw in all your lies

‘Til the flames are wilder.

And then I’ll cast you in,

I’ll stand and watch you burn

Once I was the helpless one

But now it’s your turn.

Broken chains.

I now am free to ponder.

Now I can breathe,

I am choked no longer.

Broken chains

I so wanted to burst

I so wanted to break

But you did first.

Broken chains! Broken chains!

You’ll never hold me back again.

You have no power,

You have no strength,

I’ve thrown you off,

Stamped out your stain.

I’ve trampled you

Under my feet

I know the truth

And I stand free.

Now that you are broken

I can laugh

I discovered the secret

That broke you in half.
