Strings

(A poem. Written in 2016, later tweaked and edited.)

There’s something changed in me

Something released down deep

Cause it all used to be

A crazy, hopeless heap.

And then in some amazing way

All the strings were straightened out.

It all fell into order

And peace emerged from doubt.

Where once there were

Just twists and turns

And it was all explosion

I now can breath again.

Strings are what is holding everything together in my heart,

Each person and each thing I love hold one end, and I hold the start,

But sometimes all the strings get tangled up I don’t know what to do.

I can’t straighten it out without letting go of one or two.

Sometimes it’s like

A string gets pulled real tight

It hurts…it stings…

But I hold on with all my might.

Yet soon I realize

That even though I’ve tried

It wants to detach itself

And I’m on the losing side

And sometimes if its roots go deep

It’s hard to let it out.

Maybe it even leaves a scar

That will never fully heal

Strings are supposed to bind

But often I find

That instead of holding up

They break things up

And painfully uproot

Just when everything gets dark

But what is really amazing is

That once a string pulls out

A dozen more fall into place

And everything feels lined up

Yes everything feels lined up

And everybody knows

It takes the storm

Before the flower grows

Before the river flows

Before the rainbows.

Strings are what is holding everything together in my heart,

One day I’d like to

Pick you up

Pick you up again

But til that can happen

I’d rather have

Control of where the strings are goin’
