Why Modesty is Important to Me

Dressing modestly isn’t important to most people. In fact, let’s be brutally honest…most people try to get away with letting as much show as possible. That’s just the vicious truth.

And not to excuse anyone in the slightest, but we’ve all been so thoroughly conditioned to it. It’s shown on billboards, in commercials & TV programs, movies, magazines, etc, and it’s being glorified and lifted up as a totally fine, even desirable, thing. The world’s way of dressing is presented everywhere we turn. We are up against such difficult odds.

It’s easy to give up.

It’s easy to go for what’s comfortable or convenient.

But do YOU want to be the person taking the easy road? Or the one taking the RIGHT path?

I know I want to take the right path!

Deuteronomy 5:32
Ye shall observe to do therefore as the LORD your God hath commanded you: ye shall not turn aside to the right hand or to the left.

So friend, let me show you why modesty is important to me.

Dressing modestly is respectful to others.

Dressing in an appropriate manner is a way of showing respect to the people you are around every day. People notice it, whether consciously or subconsciously. It indicates unselfish character…it shows that you’re not a self-centered person, focused only on your own desires.

Not only that, but it shows love and consideration for those of the opposite gender. Instead of enticing them, drawing them in by tight or revealing clothes, I show that I do not place my value in my physical body, but in character and soul and mind.

The way I dress represents who I am.

It’s just a fact that people will treat you based on how you dress. If you dress nicely, people will treat you with more courtesy than if you’re dressed sloppy. I’ve personally noticed that when I wear a skirt, guys will react differently, holding open doors for me & being extra polite (it always makes so happy to see!).

When I went to Mexico two years ago on a missions trip, my friends and I wore skirts, and the boys dressed in polo shirts & long pants, and everywhere we stopped, gas station, restaurant, store, somebody or another would ask us if we were Christians. They knew!

PEOPLE CAN TELL WHO YOU ARE BY HOW YOU DRESS.

If we only understood how important our appearance really is! Of course, in comparison, it doesn’t matter as much as our hearts matter, but that doesn’t mean we can dismiss it.

Modesty is commanded of God.

Forgetting everything else I’ve said, we are commanded of God to be modest. That’s really the bottom line. It doesn’t matter whether we want to or not. We are told to; it is our duty.

Jesus said, “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me” (John 10:27). If we are truly His, then we will obey Him even if our flesh doesn’t want to.

And if we obey cheerfully and with all of our hearts, will we not receive of God a great reward? So much greater than any comfort, “fulfillment” or convenience we might have had otherwise.

So I pray that this encourages you to evaluate this area of your life and consider maybe some things you might not have thought about before. May God help each of us every day to make wise choices.
