In Every Language

Matthew 28:19

“Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:”

A missionary from San Luis Potosí, Mexico, attended my church today. He studied at a Bible Institute in Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico where a lot of my church’s college students have gone over the years.

This man shared that one day, a missionary man from the USA knocked on the door, and because of that, his family came to know Jesus Christ. As he shared this, his thankfulness just flowed out, and multiple times he expressed his gratefulness that the US sent missionaries into his country. He talked about how because of our example, his country was now sending out missionaries, and going to places even where white people are not welcome.

Anyways, this man went on to share that his burden is to work on translating the Word of God into more languages. He told us that there are still sooo many languages that don’t even have pieces of the Bible translated. I could see the feeling in his eyes as he held up his Bible and exclaimed, “Where would all of us be without this book!?!”

If page one on Google is to be believed (and it probably isn’t unfortunately), then the complete Bible has been translated into 636 languages, the New Testament into 1,442, and various portions into 1,145. Subtract those from the 6,909 supposed languages across the earth and you get 3,686 total that have zero – ZERO – words of the Bible translated into them.

Now I realize that a good portion of those languages have very few people that speak them, many just 1,000 in number or less. But still guys. Wow. 3,686.

Just let that sink in.

Thinking about it has really made me stop and realize just how blessed I am to have words of God Himself in my own language. It also made me realize that I needed to be praying for those who are working to translate the Bible into new languages and dialects. I hope that sharing this helps others to see this too, and that we would all be faithful in praying for this cause.
