Are There Mistakes in the Word of God?

It’s bound to happen at some point. You think you are secure in your trust of the Bible, you think you will never doubt it, but then something comes along and you say, “wait…maybe the Bible does have errors in it.”

At this point, I can just see Satan rubbing his hands together in glee, because he has you right where he wants you…doubting the one thing that can keep you out of his clutches.

Think of the Bible as your foundation…the pillars on which everything, your faith, your hope, your very worldview, rest. If Satan can shake the foundation, the whole building could come down. That is why our faith in the Word of the Almighty God must be absolute trust.

So if you struggle to have confidence that the Holy Bible is the perfect, inspired and pure word of God, here are a few things to remember.

The Word of God requires a special key to understand it.

We as Christians often forget that we have an advantage when we read the Bible. An unbeliever can read the Word a thousand times, but without the Holy Spirit of God within, they cannot truly understand the message written there. Unfortunately, because they do not really comprehend the fullness of what they read, they come up with dozens of supposed “errors”, and loudly proclaim that the Bible is filled with contradictions. This causes some Christians to be confused and question their faith.

The “contradictions” in the Bible can be understood and proven to be perfectly consistent if you take the time to look closer and study them.

A lot of people like to point to one or two examples of passages that they think conflict, and then use that as their basis, and say the entire Bible is therefore invalid. Usually they are either

  • reading verses out of context
  • reading into the text (making assumptions about what the Bible is trying to say)
  • not reading the verses carefully
  • assuming that the way we use a word today is the way they used it when the Bible was translated
  • or using a corrupt Bible version.

{Just a note on the last point: I declare that the Authorized King James Bible is the correct, inerrant, perfectly preserved Word of God in the English language, and I do not answer for any contradictions in other translations e.g. NIV, NKJV, etc.}

I actually pulled a list offline of a lot…I think it’s a couple hundred…supposed contradictions in the Bible, and it’s my plan to work through them all and prove them wrong. Not for someone else – not even for the person who made that list – but for me, to strengthen my own faith.

As I started reading through them, I realized that there were quite a few that I am going to have to study to find the answers for. But I’m gonna find those answers. I think that if Christians would just take time to study things like this, they would be a lot more stable in their beliefs.

Remember all the other things that prove its accuracy.

Here is just a small list of thing that show us that the Bible is divine.

  • Prophesies that have come true
  • Its perfect preservation for thousands of years
  • Its historical accuracy
  • Its perfect representation of the character of man
  • The fruit that it produces in our lives

I was actually just reading a book recently that focused several chapters on painstakingly explaining how eclipses prove that the dates in the Bible are 100% correct, right down to the first day of creation. A lot of it went right over my head, but I was able to understand enough that I was quite amazed and realized how truly, “The heavens declare the glory of God…” It is through things like these that we can test and see that the Bible is not the work of man, but something really supernatural.

Conclusion

I hope that this has been an encouragement to you! I pray that you will stand strong in your faith in the word of God. The world lies to you. Satan deceives you. But God just puts it like it is and gives you 100% TRUTH.

Proverbs 30:5
“Every word of God is pure: he is a shield unto them that put their trust in him.”

    1. Good observation, except that you don’t need to read the Bible to be a Christian. You just need to believe on the Lord Jesus Christ. ☺ “If thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.” Romans 10:9

      1. If by “Christian” you mean “born again” (because “Christian” is a very vague term in today’s world), then you cannot become a Christian without believing in Jesus Christ so I’m not sure what you’re asking.
Also, I looked at your blog, and if it’s true you grew up Christian, you should know all this, so why are you asking me?

      2. It seems that I’ve been unclear in my questions; sorry about that. Let me explain.

You said in your post, “An unbeliever can read the Word a thousand times, but without the Holy Spirit of God within, they cannot truly understand the message written there.”

It’s often said that the best evidence for Jesus Christ is the Gospels. Following this, the way to learn about Jesus is through reading the Gospel. But if someone doesn’t believe (and therefore isn’t a Christian), then they won’t understand the message within the Gospels.

You also said that “you cannot become a Christian without believing in Jesus Christ.” This would mean that you have to read the Gospel before you can believe, but you also said that the Gospel wouldn’t make sense to someone who doesn’t have the Holy Spirit within them, which comes from Jesus, an understanding of whom comes from reading the Gospels, in order to do so you need the Holy Spirit.

Basically my question is this: how would an unbeliever break that cycle and gain the Holy Spirit in order to learn about Jesus? Which step comes first?

      3. Ok, I see what you’re saying. Let me try to explain.

        2 Corinthians 4:3-4 say,

“But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost:

In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.”

“The god of this world”, Satan, blinds the eyes of those who do not believe. Therefore, yes, they can read the Bible as much as they want, and only get so much from it. However, the Holy Spirit is working against the Devil:

        1 Thessalonians 1:5

“For our gospel came not unto you in word only, but also in power, and in the Holy Ghost, and in much assurance;”

The Holy Spirit is necessary in order to believe, for 1 Corinthians 12:3 says “Wherefore I give you to understand, that no man speaking by the Spirit of God calleth Jesus accursed: and that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost.”

Once a person has believed in Jesus Christ, they become a part of His Church, and therefore, the Holy Ghost dwells within them.

1 Corinthians 6:19, “What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?”

The Holy Spirit then teaches us the deep things of God.

1 Corinthians 2:10: “But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God.”

1 Corinthians 2:13: “Which things also we speak, not in the words which man’s wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual.”

I hope this answered your questions?
